Gurdjieff never failed to make it clear that the possession of one's own will is the mark of the real man. Consequently the development of man should be conceived not in terms of knowledge and being only, but rather of the three elements of knowledge, being and will. Failure to recognize this has been one of the reasons why the practical application of Gurdjieff's methods has not always given the results that one hoped for.
